How are you saving money?

We know that America is quickly becoming a third-world country due to a number of things not limited to skyrocketing energy costs which, in turn, increase the costs of everything in sight including groceries, clothes, electronic goods, midget prostitutes, paper and everything else made in China.

The good question (I hope WCCO doesn't sue me for copyright infringement or some sort of intellectual property thing) is how are you saving money in these times where frugality is a necessity?

I, for one, am doing my part to conserve. I am conserving gas by both driving slower on the highways (the actual speed limit) and mowing my lawn less frequently because it isn;'t growing due to the lack of rain. I am also conserving water by wearing my underwear not just once but twice by turning it inside out (think I'm joking?).

So, short of selling an organ or a child, what are you doing for extra cash in these admittedly dire times?

Of course, not all areas are in a dire state necessitating twice-worn undies... MinnPics is a testament to that with the best photos in Minnesota showcased daily.

The only things I'm really doing differently are trying to drive in a more fuel efficient manner and trying to bike a little more. I don't drive enough for that to make a huge difference, but gas isn't even close to being a significant portion of my budget due to a really short commute. In fact, I think of it more in terms of environmental and personal health impact than cost savings.

Other than that, I've been focused hardcore on debt reduction more than savings. I keep a cushion on hand that I was not able to keep a couple years ago and I have a small emergency fund that I contribute a small amount to monthly. That's it. Strategy will change completely a year from now when everything's paid off, though.

So that's my non-answer to your question.

omg turning your underwear inside out and wearing it twice? I'm not sure if that's genius or gross or both.
I'm buying things on sale, using coupons, driving less and less. My boyfriend, however, has an F350 and you know what he did? He went out and got a scooter. that was HUGE for him. he now spends $20 instead of $200 a week on gas. it seems like everyone is getting a scooter these days. not a bad idea I think.

I'm biking more, and hitting the Farmer's Markets a lot. Other than that, I'm pretty sure I'm still blindly spending as if the stuff grew on trees.

I'm guessing that won't last long.

We actually have always bought food and goods when on sale, stay completely away from credit card debt, and don't eat out much. I generally drive cars longer than average, and paid my house off years ago. These all actually work!
