WFTC (My 29) channel 29 adds only "The Ricki Lake Show" to its daytime schedule which is otherwise littered with court shows, a couple of Law & Order: Criminial Intent repeats and a mish-mash of sitcom / animated comedy repeats. I've now gone about five years since even stopping my TV's remote on WFTC.

KMSP (FOX 9) channel 9 has a court show-heavy schedule much like its sister station WFTC. They also air both The Wendy Williams Show and The Ricki Lake Show which can be seen at different times on WFTC channel 29. They do, though, add the revamped Ander Cooper talker "Anderson Live".

6:30 PM The King of Queens

Unless you're in love with sitcoms fom 15-20 years ago, KSTC channel 45's daytime television schedule isn't for you. With the only new programming being KSTC's rehashing of Minneapolis / St. Paul news for two hours to begin the daytime schedule and Steve Harvey's talk show, KSTC seems targeted to a few generations older than myself.

KSTP channel 5
 7:00 AM Good Morning America
9:00 AM Live! With Kelly

11:00 AM 5 Eyewitness News Midday

6:30 PM 5 Eyewitness News at 6:30

By the time September 10th happens, it will be official that Live! with Kelly (Ripa) will be paired with Michael Strahan and his huge gap between his front teeth. The only big addition to KSTP channel 5's daytime television schedule is Katie Couric's new daytime talk show which bumps ABC's last daytime soap, General Hospital, an hour earlier.

WCCO channel 4
 7:00 AM CBS This Morning
9:00 AM The Jeff Probst Show

Is KSTP-TV actively trying to lose money?

It intrigued me that local TV station KSTP plans to launch what can only be described as a boatload of "hyperlocal" websites in the next year. One commenter on the MinnPost story nailed it squarely on the head by saying that KSTP (and the Hubbards who own the station) are two years late in trying something that has already failed across the country.

I can also attest to the "hyperlocal" idea being worthless. Without giving too much away, I proposed a hyperlocal website at my place of employment just over two years ago. Just like everything else, it was dependent on local/area advertising. My proposal, on paper, sounded like a sure thing but even as I read it just minutes ago I realized that, given the current economic environment, the sales figures would never have even come close to the rather conservative dollar amounts I had projected.

And to think that an even more conservative-minded company thinks they can successfully staff and fill multiple hyperlocal news/content websites with anything remotely captivating, much less original, is insane. My project proposal incorporated multiple existing elements and products to it and could still be easily rolled out to other communities/neighborhoods. KSTP's plans, while somewhat unclear, really make no mention of incorporating their suite of niche products to give them further exposure. Hell, I have no idea if KSTP even has any truly worthwhile niche products but I don't expect the websites to be islands of content either.

The mere mention of the KSTP sites containing press releases makes them seem even less valuable. Sure, it's legit information but publishing it in the general news flow immediately devalues any legitimate news the sites may contain. And the plans they have for expanding them to their outstate markets including Duluth-Superior and Austin-Rochester makes even less sense. Those areas are still havens for the newspapers who own those markets. Attempting to launch a competing product under the umbrella of a less-than-reputable name is suicide and KAAL-TV in Austin is considered by residents to be a laughingstock. The station, under the ownership of Hubbard, has virtually abandoned coverage of its home market in favor of the more lucrative Rochester market. That bare-bones operation barely turns a profit as it stands now and further diluting it for the sake of hyperlocal websites which the community newspapers and their websites in the area already cover quite well will ensure that the outstate KSTP hyperlocal websites are the first to be shuttered followed soon after by those in the Twin Cities.

But if KSTP is curious about my well-researched plan and wants to talk to me, I'm more than willing to listen. Let's just say I know the Austin market quite well. Call me...

Will KSTP's PM chatfest fly?

Later today, the only locally-owned Twin Cities TV station (KSTP channel 5) launches their new 3 PM locally produced/hosted program. From the promos I've seen, it seems to be a transplant of the long-gone local morning shows which focused on the light-hearted events and shied away from actual murder/arson news cleverly titled "Twin Cities Live".

Being a graphically focused type, the show seems to have a decent graphics package going for it and thankfully broke free from the overused KSTP 5 Eyewitness News graphics package. They also seem to have done a decent job of having a feminine-leaning touch to the overall design without going too far and alienating people with penises all together.
I do have to wonder what sort of audience they realistically hope to attract with what is essentially a morning show program airing at 3 PM. What percentage of women who would benefit from a program with light celebrity interviews and cooking segments are actually near a TV at 3 PM? I know about this thing called TIVO but a program like this, airing daily, seems like it would be rather timely in nature. Realistically speaking, it all boils down to the almighty dollar. As a plus, KSTP gets to sell local ad time for an additional hour. As a minus, they added the salary of two additional dedicated hosts as well as possibly additional support staff. As a positive, they save having to shell out money for syndicated content to fill an hour. As a minus, they risk losing the brand recognition of syndicated programming. As a positive, KSTP ups the ante in being more local than the other guys and adding staff originally from Minnesota (both hosts hail from Minnesota).

I don't really care about a show airing at 3 PM; especially when I'm about as far from the target demographic as possible. I am curious if other metropolitan areas have something akin to this airing essentially at the middle of the day. Does it work? Do people watch it? What sort of longetivity does a show such as this have before it burns out?
